11/8/2023 0 Comments Equalizer show cast![]() ![]() When one of Control's operations involved lying to McCall, and McCall confronted him, Control's only response was, "It's what I do for a living, Robert." All in all, a wonderful show with high production values. There is a history of camraderie between Control and McCall, but Control's job tends to get in the way of that friendship. Although McCall resigned from the CIA, he continued to maintain contact with his friend and former boss, a man known only as Control (played by Robert Lansing). One of his most trusted colleagues was his comrade-in-arms Mickey Kostmeyer (played by Keith Szarabajka), a Company man who seemed willing to dive into any dangerous situation for the thrill. ![]() Although he was quite able in shootouts and fisticuffs, he tended to leave the rough stuff to other operatives who sometimes took time off from their day jobs (usually in the CIA) to work for McCall. McCall's strength was his abilities as a strategist and tactician. Disenchanted with his cloak-and-dagger life in the CIA, and perhaps seeking some redemption for some of his darker exploits in the name of God and Country, he broke away from "the Company," and offered his services to people in trouble. Whether he attended an embassy affair or was running down a lead on a guns dealer in the South Bronx, McCall seemed right at home. He relied more on brains than brawn and his plans worked like a game of chess. Robert McCall (played to perfection by Edward Woodward) was no Mike Hammer, nor was he meant to be. It effectively mixed espionage, crime drama, and the private eye genres into a wonderful film noir package. On the big screen, Kittles made his feature film debut in Tigerland. The music by Marcelo Zarvos is better than it's ever been, so distinct and noticeably industrial."The Equalizer" was an action-adventure TV series unlike any that I had ever seen before. (Detective Marcus Dante, The Equalizer) Tory Kittles is best known for his television roles in the drama series True Detective, opposite Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, Carlton Cuse’s Colony, with Josh Holloway, and Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy. Antione Fuqua's direction impresses yet again, the violence has never been faster or more brutal and the stark colour palette allows this one to stand out in contrast to its predecessors. The subplot involving Dakota Fanning initially threatens to derail the film but thankfully it ties back into the main narrative effectively and any scene she shares with Washington is great because it's both a Man on Fire reunion and her rapport with Washington is so good. The villains are really weak, it's not a massive distraction as they remain easy to hate and don't take up too much time but as the marketing implied that this would be McCall meeting his equal is kinda laughable considering how little they feel like a genuine threat to him. This time around he gets to be happy and show McCall actually enjoying life for once and as this is the final instalment there's obviously some introspection and self reflection as well. On a quest to finally find and maintain happiness, Denzel Washington is as flawless as ever. The ending hinders it a little because it feels anticlimactic but it still works. The Equalizer 3 rounds out this unexpected trilogy with another satisfying action thriller that continues the journey of a man who understands violence, trying to finally put that behind him, placing him out of his element to show quite literally how far he goes for people.
